Argaka for Christmas

We are going to Argaka arriving Boxing Day. We have hired a 4 x 4 and are hoing to do a bit of exploring as I guess the weather wont be up to lounging by the pool all day. Any info on nice places to eat, and villages to visit from people with experience would be really helpful. Also we will be there for New years Eve, is it likely that there will be any type of celebration any way local ? Thanks for any input we receive.

Hi Davylynne. We have stayed in Polis for the past 2 Christmas/New Year holidays. The weather has been mixed so be prepared for anything from short sleeve t-shirts to roll neck jumper and jacket. As soon as the sun goes down, the temperature drops. Also it can rain. With a 4WD there are many tracks to explore between Argaka and Stavros and the Akamas beyond Neo Chorio. There are quite a few restaurants/tavernas open but some do shut for the holiday period. I%26#39;m not sure about Argaka but the Fly Again and Liza%26#39;s Place are the type to stay open and have something happening on New Years Eve (check as soon as you arrive as some places you have to book). In Polis, Mystery Tavern and Savvas The Fisherman have cosy log fires and are open most of the time. Also ChixChox in the centre is open most of the year. Moustakkalis usually shuts for the holiday but otherwise is open most of the year . There are other places in the area, especially at Latchi and on the road to Latchi. If the options dont appeal for New Year%26#39;s Eve, you can always go to the grounds of the big church in Polis. (As you come from Argaka, on the right at the top of the hill). The municipality provide wine, nibbles, music and displays of dancing. At midnight, fireworks are let off from the nearby army camp (very loud!) and New Year cake is distributed. Hope this is of help and enjoy your break.
