Just back from Pernera

Arrived home yesterday after a fantastic two weeks of glorious weather and warm sea and my love of Cyprus has not dimmed one bit.

Prices not changed much from May, in fact most of the restaurants have reduced the prices as it is end of season but the exchange rate is dire and the money doesn%26#39;t go as far. 1.04 when we left. Budgeted on £100 per day and got through well having breakfast in the apartment but eating out lunchtime and evening although didn%26#39;t do any trips this time and managed to use free sunbeds outside the Domniki apartments instead of having to pay 8 euros a day for bed and brolly. Any hotel will allow you to use their sunbeds provided you show courtesy and have a drink with them. All in all pleasantly surprised but the warning signs are there that prices are set to increase next year.

Some profiteering - books which were obviously purchased pre euro and still had the old Cypriot prices on had been increased to an incredible 20 euros for a paperback. Lilos - some being sold for 20 euros when they were 6 euros last year but you quite simply don%26#39;t buy them! Taxis - what can I say. 8 euros minimum price. Taxi drivers don%26#39;t like the English because we always ask for a fixed price, much prefer Scandanavian or Russian tourists who never query the price. Buses economical - 1.50 euros however far you travel.

Two tips - take your own sun lotion. Boots Soltan (and don%26#39;t ask me how some shops are selling that in Cyprus) - 20 euros when you can get it in the UK for buy one get one free. Piz Buin and Nivea - 14 euros upwards.

If you have a night flight remember at this time of year it is dark in the mornings so carry mossie spray with you and spray as soon as you get off the plane or even at your departure airport. Its the only time I got bitten walking out of the airport at Larnaca and I had a badly swollen ankle for a few days. There are still plenty of mossies about in the evening.

Roll on next May!

Great insight Kath.

We will be visiting again next year and was wondering about the prices creeping up again.When will it end?

Where did you stay?Did you walk the path?

Regards, Poley

Stayed at The Livas apartments again - best family run apartments in Pernera. The walkway is a fantastic addition to the area, generally walked along there early morning stopping off for a breakfast at Zafiros and watching the world go by. Roll on next May!!

June 4 us, but we will be staying in Nissi, But will defo get the bus to Protaras and walk the path to Pernera.What was the temps like?was the humidity low?

|||

Temperature was fantastic first two weeks in October - not high humidity but lovely and hot during the day and warm in the evening although temperatures in the evening were dropping rapidly by the 14th. June will be hot but high humidity doesn%26#39;t really kick in until late June/July/August (when it is almost unbearable).

I hear you loud and clear on the question of the cost of sunbeds here now. I have complained to the CTO about it! Not that that will do any good.

But, at 2.50 each for 2 beds and one umbrella and no reduction for half day use (costs that even if you only want to lie on them for an hour or so - not everyone wants to lie on the beach all day), I think it is extortionate. Especially as some of them have definitely seen better days, broken supports and dried out cracked cushions.

I noticed this year that more and more people were just lying on towels on the sand or bringing their own chairs.

roll on next September, not bothered about the prices, would rather stop at home than be worried about costs
