Big Screen/TV at most restaurants- Why?

Just returned from 2 weeks holiday in Larnaca - and I am wondering if anyone can tell my - why is it that almost every restaurant, cafe and taverna in the Larnaca have big TV/screens most of the time showing football - also during the time when guests are dining - I found it impossible to find a place without having to feel distubed by that!

unless you know larnaca this is a menace we use hobos, the cookoos nest and a couple of the restaurants on mckenzie beach i have no idea why they do it ,it is happening all over i guess they think we cant live without sports bars julie

You should have ventured out a little further to the more traditional restaurants in Larnaca. No TV!Just a lovely view, good good and wine.

Thank you for your reply - have you any concret suggestions whch restaurants/tavernas to visit?

The art cafe which is open in the evenings .A bar downstairs and a restaurant up.Full of paintings books and photos.Lovely owner. In a road near the Tourist information.

Any of the little restaurants and fish tavernas on the coast road the other side of the fort.

I live off the coast road on the other side of the fort and almost all the eateries there have some TVs going all day and night (even Chris%26#39;s Takeaway Kebab Shop!)

Last year I took two friends to the Aquafront Tavern there for the Wed night BBQ with Traditional Greek Music evening. I was dismayed to find the HUGE TV showing a football match at one end whilst the musicians played at the other end. And the TV was louder than the music if you were seated in that half.

I understand your concern, wherever I go in Cyprus now, if it is a %26#39;Tourist Area%26#39;, it seems every establishment boasts all day fry ups, cheap pints of KEO and Wide TV football coverage. I can only think they are convinced that that is what %26#39;holidaymakers%26#39; want.

On this very subject, I have a couple of pals from the UK staying here at the mo and last week we counted no less than SEVEN TV screens on the go in just one seafront cafe/bar on Finicoudes!

Thank you very much for alle your replies - I have stayed 14 days in Larnaca every year for the last 9 years, - and I dont like what I see now, it is almost impossible to dine at night at a tavern/restaurant or cafe without having to watch TV. And thank you for mentionering 1900 Art cafe, I know the place very well, and I always enjoy visiting the place. Maybe it is time for me to find another place to spend my holidays, one in my family thinks that Larnaca now is almost like Ayia Napa (and it was not ment as a commendation) - or should we help each other to ask if it is possible to turn off the TV, while we are dinning!!!!!! - Anyway I think I will contact the tourist authority about the problem. Thank again to all of you.
