I have read lots about theme/tribute act/karaoke bars in this area but are there any for those of us who would prefer a more relaxed time and the occasional cocktail?

Along the main road - Nissi Avenue, are many bars competing with their tribute acts.
Move just off of the main road (most side roads), and you will find numerous restaurants and bars - often more traditional, that have much more subtle music either in the background, or as paid entertainment; or venture into some of the hotels such as the %26#39;all-inclusives%26#39; have to put on entertainment to appeal to their clients, and there%26#39;s nothing to stop you going in and sampling goods from their bars.
If you take a trip up to the square, just before you reach the area inhabited by the busy clubs, you%26#39;ll find %26#39;the square pub%26#39;, it occupies quite a commanding position and there is seating to eat %26amp; drink both indoors and out, they have a %26#39;spot%26#39; which normally has up to 3 acts per week, sometimes 2 share an evening - these are usually very versatile vocalists who have been sourced from Europe over the winter months, they often perform requests for covers, and have their own repertoire, not a cheap place to drink, but you can take your own and sit across the courtyard on the low wall, still enjoy the music and entire atmosphere, do a bit of people watching, most nights there are 2 or 3 caricature artists, drawing in charcoal, and chargrilled sweetcorn cooked freshly.
Walk towards the harbour and you may find some cultural local or folk displays, check out http://www.visitcyprus.com/wps/portal
or stay in private accommodation so that you can chill to your own entertainment... put nissi2beach into google

Thanks for the info most appreciated.

there are plenty of more upmarket places opening up now in the area which are aimed at those of us not into the tribute acts type places.
there is a plce on sandy bay which is called nissaki, you can get to it from nissi avenue by following the turn off for the callisto blue village, or from the beachfront at sandy bay. this is a chilled out bar with loungers on the beach front.
napa plaza has opened 2 bars outside the front of the hotel - pepper and cafe centro. very popular with the locals they are definately a bit nicer. also liquid is very popular (turn right at the ravens rook)
most bars now are quieter, the ones with the entertainment tend to be busier, even if you head up to the square, you may even like the bars around the centre with are much less busy and more chilled out at this time of year. try the square pub, which had accoustic live music, live lounge, titanic (sit outside and people watch), sea cavern, there are plenty to chhose from so i%26#39;m sure you will find something to suit you.
