Last minute panic!!

Booked flights to Cyprus with my partner today and arriving in Cyprus this Saturday (19th September)!! We have never visited Cyprus before and we haven%26#39;t organised any accomodation yet - there is just so much out there we don%26#39;t have a clue where to start. We would like to experiece the true Cyprus and enjoy nice food and walks. Accomodation wise I am just so confused from looking on tripadvisor, I am settled on hotel and then there is a bad review!! We would like modern well maintained accomodation with a pool and seaview not in an overly touristy area (ie not Ayia Napa etc)...does any body have any suggestions??! Would really appreciate your help!

Where in Cyprus are you landing ?

Although a small island it is a big question, to help are you going to the North or South and will you have a hire car?

I doubt any problems on accommodation as high season is over and tourist numbers are down.

I think I would really worry about a hotel if there are several bad reviews showing a real trend.

Thank you both for responding! I fly into Larnaca and from reviews I have read we plan to hire a car to do a bit of exploring while we are there. To experience Cyprus at its best (ie nice beaches and villages but not too touristy - perhaps unrealistic!!) would you recommend going north or south of the island? One final question, is there any particularly reputable apartment / villa company that we could see if they are doing last minute deals. Many thanks to you both!!!

Because of the political situation it is very much either South or North. Some Hire car firms in the South allow their cars to cross to the North but they usually will not provide insurance cover and you will have to buy your own.

For the South the major areas from East to West are Protaras. Ayia Napa, Larnaca, Limassol (Lemesos on road signs) and Pathos. The East is really a younger element than Pathos. All these have a wide range of hotels.

There are small places in between such as Zygi and Governor%26#39;s Beach between Larnaca and Limassol and Pissouri between Limassol and Pathos. There are small hotels in these areas

The area West and North of Pathos to Akamas Peninsular and Polis is to my mind the best coastal area although some parts are difficult to reach. The foothills of Troodos are also interesting around here.

For another area Troodos mountain is worth visiting with Omodos, Platres and Kakopetria are well worth considering.

Nicosia (Lefkosia on road signs) is not top of my list for visitors but I do take mine to the old walled city and usually cross to the North on foot at the Ledra Street Crossing, the contrast between the 2 parts of the walled city are interesting.

If you hav%26#39;ent been to Cyprus before I would start with Paphos. We usually stay at Damon Apartments just off the Tomb of the Kings road, they are good value, the people cheerful and you can use all the facillaties at the Kefalos beach hotel 5 minutes walk away. This has sunbeds on a lawn in front of the beach very peaceful. You are about 25 mins walk along the beach from the harbour which is really nice, a bit busy sometimes but its bound to be. The archeological park near the lighthouse on the way to the harbour is superb with loads of mosaics and museums and loads of birds. Paphos town is interesting as is the Tombs of the kings. There are loads of food and drink offers on Tomb of the Kings road, we like Thomas%26#39;s jungle but Tramps bar is good also and house of blues for music. Beast restaurant is Seven St Goorges, a fiver taxi ride away, they do meze only and it is different every night but starts with warm fresh baked bread with dates and walnuts in and gets better. You can hire a car for 70 quid a week and drive to see Polis and Latchi in the North West and walk along the Akamas peninslua. have a great time we%26#39;re going 1st 2 weeks in Nov, cheers
