Driving to Cyprus/Shipping

Would like to drive to Cyprus from Italy. Having no problem getting to Athens, but ferries to Cyprus from Athens seem to have been suspended? Alternatively, could I ship my car from Athens then fly over, but how much/how long would shipping take?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. :-?

Hi Teajay

Not sure if this helps but sailings if they still operate would start late april / May. I decided to drive my car from the UK but like you came to a dead end at Athens, so I shipped it from Southampton instead

Thanks Kev. How long did that take and what sort of cost, if you don%26#39;t mind me asking??

From Liverpool to Limassol for a Audi Allroad the price was £1,100 this summer.

Sorry,journey time 10 days...

Thanks Leica......that%26#39;s interesting info as hubby comes from Liverpool, so we could arrange shipping from there whilst visiting family. Much appreciated!

Hi teajay

Sorry did not get back to you, but answer to your question

I found it expensive to go from Liverpool, I drove my Hyundai Coupe to Southampton, the Roll on roll off was £375 plus vat %26amp; this was through Lombard shipping in liverpool, I then got a Bmi Flight back from Southampton Airport to Liverpool for £25.

The are 2 options on the Roll-on Roll-off a direct route or one that stops at various ports, I think as someone has pointed out that it took 10 days I opted for the 21 days. Br aware that either option is subject to getting port space to unload that could be upto 3 - 4 days anchored in Limassol bay.

My Car is 9 yrs old %26amp; is a 1600cc engine you will need a shipping agent at limassol because it is a nightmare over there, also be aware the shipping agent would have to have to be a Cyprus Government Agent with a Cyprus stamp ( and %26amp; I dont mean Special Agent lol) I eventually paid CYP235 to get my car out of the compound, again Cyprus robbing people again I believe Cyprus are being fined over this practise from Brussels %26amp; they are still doing it. Once you got all your paper work done I had to register the car at the Transport office which cost CYP245.

So it cost me just under a grand in sterling but it was worth it as I have a decent car that runs well %26amp; I know the history of it, whereas if I bought a car over here I would not be able to afford the same car %26amp; spec over here

Thanks for that Kev. You have been a great help. As we live so close to the Italian Border we are thinking of a route through to Turkey and across on the ferry to North Cyprus. Just making enquiries on that. If not, then we will have to ship, but try a port nearer to home. We are the same as you. Our car is 5 years old with very little milage and we want to take it over and keep it there as a holiday runaround, plus we have a boot full of stuff to take over.

Thanks for all the tips. It gives us an idea of price and bureaucracy, which we are used to living in Germany?

Hi Teajay

bureaucracy ? thats an understatement if ever I heard one, I think thatcher is over here in disguise haha.

Also be warned if you decide to take it over on a roll-on roll-off don%26#39;t put anything valuable in the boot as you have to pass your keys over once on board.

I had to go back to the UK to make arrangements for my car to be shipped over, I bought 6 months tax so I could drive it down to southampton. When it arrived at Limassol guess what the tax disc was stolen. I contacted DVLA %26amp; they told me that it had already been surrended %26amp; there was nothing they can do about it. They also said that if I paid £15 I could get the name of the person who surrended the disc %26amp; they got the nerve to call us Scousers all the names under the sun

So it%26#39;s not a case of %26#39;watch your wallet!%26#39;, but your tax disc now??? What a joke. That%26#39;s ok, I%26#39;ll leave as little as poss on mine, so thanks for the tip! The more we think about it, the more we fancy the ferry to Turkey. Just need to check we will have no shite going thru to southern Cyprus with a full car!

Ta for everything. It gives us a clearer picture. Hope the weather is ok there. We%26#39;ve had about 2 feet of snow????????

Anyone else interested in this topic, there is a roll-on roll-off ferry twice a week from Athens. It takes 2 days and you can accompany your vehicle if you wish, or not, as the case may be! The company is Salamis shipping who are reasonably priced and very helpful. There is also a ferry from Italy direct ti Limassol with Grimauldi lines, but takes 7 days! We shall put the car on the ferry and then fly over to Paphos. All sorted. Thanks fro all comments.
