Supermarkets....

We are staying in the Coral Bay/ Peyia district in a villa (self catering) and wondered if anyone could tell me the name and location of the nearest decent sized supermarket. I%26#39;m not exactly expecting a Tesco but.......maybe I%26#39;ll have to go to Paphos? Many Thanks....

As far as I can remember yhere is a well stocked supermarket just behind the church in Peyia.

|||

Papantonious in Chlorakas is fairly big

|||

The closest is probably the one behind the church in Peyia and it is called Phillippos. Very wide variety and pretty decent prices.

Hi

An update on Phillipos - yes the one you mention by the church is still there, but he has now opened a big supermarket much nearer Coral Bay. Coming from there go up the hill, turn left (where there is a restaurant on each corner) sorry cannot remember the names, then go to crossroad, turn left and it is on the right hand side. You cannot miss it, look for all the flags on the building. Good supermarket, sells everything, now has a fresh meat counter, and fresh fish section, also plenty of fruit and veg.

Muich easier to park too than the one by the church, lots of car parking space, front and rear of store.

Open early till late.

Also a new garage now open, as you come from Peyia on the main road towards road to Paphos or Coral Bay.

Thanks freezia, that%26#39;s useful info.

Is that Peyia take away food place still opp The Jail House Pub...

|||

Tankard

The take away place was still open last August and was doing a roaring trade so I imagine its probably still there. Am sure someone else on here will be able to confirm. If not there is also one down on Coral Bay main strip that seems to be open late.

Hi,

Philippos in Pegeia behind the church (limited parking spaces, more spaces in the Municipal car park just a bit further downhill). New Philippos on main Coral Bay - Pegeia road, much easier access and parking.

If in Paphos: Papantoniou is very close to the large, free car park by the waterfront/Mosaic Houses.

If in Paphos: Orphanides just off the big roundabout when you come off the motorway from Lemesos/Paphos airport direction. Orphanides is a large supermarket in a mall with other shops, plenty of free parking. There%26#39;s a MacD%26#39;s next to it to help you spot it.

Also Carrefour in Paphos. Did not go there myself so can%26#39;t really comment on that one.

Just back from a 3 week stay self-catering, so my advice is to take as much with you as possible. Apart from some fresh veg and a very limited range of fruit, we found the supermarket prices eye-wateringly high compared to food prices in the UK.

Have a great holiday.

Yeah that was our experience in Crete earlier this year. Big supermarkets - not yer tourist shops - charging sky high prices. For example €4.50 for a basic breakfast cereal.

Or, is it the exchange rate that makes it so costly.

Today €4.50=~£4.50.

Using the official rate of 1.76 the exchange works out at £2.50.

Yes stuff here does seem expensive - but the low value of the pound against the euro isn%26#39;t helping that.

The Phillipos Supermarket (the new one near Coral Bay) does stock a reasonable range of stuff at at relatively high prices. The Papanatoniou in Chlorakas would be better value and bigger range. From the main roundabout between Coral Bay and pegeia, follow the coast road towards Paphos. As you get to the end of the bit with the sea on your right, there%26#39;s a fork to the left. Take that and follow along about 2 miles, Papantoniou is on your right.

My other advice would be stick away from British brands and try local ones - they%26#39;re usually much cheaper.

If you like fruit and veg you%26#39;re in for a delight...
