Travelling to Kyrenia - best places to visit?

We%26#39;re travelling to Kyrenia this Friday, staying for a week at the High Life Hotel.

It%26#39;s our first visit to northern Cyprus, so we intend to hire a car for a couple of days to see more of the island - firstly can anyone recommend a reasonable car hire company.

Secondly, where are the best places to visit? I%26#39;ve seen pictures of roman ruins but am not sure where they are in relation to Kyrenia. Where else should we go?

Thirdly, although we%26#39;re on half board basis, where IS the best place to have a harbour-side drink, and the best place to eat - I like the sound of the Kyrenia Tavern, although am not sure how you go about reserving a table. Can anyone give me an idea of how much a meal for 2 would cost there?

Any info gratefully received!

Try bellapais car rentals on their website. Also look at thebuzzbook.com for restaurants. You will be about a mile from Ozankoy and 2 miles from Catalkoy where there are some great places to eat ( The Courtyard, Rafters, Ani`s etc ).

Harbour Club ok for harbour side drink and lunch.

We recently used Bird car rental www.birdrentacar.com and would use them again. They were reasonably priced and provided a decent car.

Can recommend going to Bellapais abbey.

Places to visit around Kyrenia area include Crusader castle in Kyrenia and St Hilarian just outside.Further afield there is Salamis,Famagusta,St Barnabus Abbey.

I would recommend you get a good guide book which will also tell you best way to get there.

I would also recommend booking a car with Bird Rentacar but would strongly suggest you book online before you go as I know they are pretty busy this time of year and there does seem to be a lot of tourists around at the moment.

Regarding Kyrenia Tavern I wouldn%26#39;t worry about booking a table as we have never had a problem whenever we have been.

I would also agree with the Harbour Club for lunch or drinks. There are tables on a small jetty that runs into the harbour and it%26#39;s nice to spend a couple of hours there people watching. They do a very reasonable set meal of meze and fish or steak for around 25TL per head.

Sorry I forgot to say that a meal for two at the Kyrenia Tavern will be about 50TL plus drinks. They don%26#39;t have a menu or a drinks list and if you order wine he will generally ask what kind you like and just bring a bottle. Do not worry though as you will definitely not be ripped off on price.
