when i read kaths post about the taxi drivers charges i thought surely it cant be that bad but kath i eat my words they are nothing but robbing .....(well just all imagine a swear word any one will do!!)8 and 9 euros for a 2 mile journey.at least dick turpin wore a mask!!!in the end we just walked it rather as give them our hard earned cash

The taxi companies do themselves no favours at all in Cyprus. Even the Cypriots agree. I%26#39;ve done with taxis, its either a hire car or if I want a drink then I walk. Good exercise anyway!! You only have to look at the taxis standing empty in the ranks to know that people are voting with their feet. I don%26#39;t work hard all year round to be ripped off (and that%26#39;s not a word I use lightly in Cyprus) but 8 euros for a 5 minute drive - no way and 120 euro return to the airport - forget it. I pay £60 return in the UK to Manchester airport and its about the same distance as from Larnaca to Protaras. Its one of the reasons there are now far more buses run by Eman in Cyprus - people have just got fed up of paying excessive charges and the taxi companies have the nerve to moan about lack of customers blaming everyone but themselves!

the taxi drivers recently went on strike to moan about their business being taken away by private companies doing airport runs and by buses.
they shoot them selves in the foot every time they overcharge as people will not get a taxi again if they can help it.
we travel the 15 km fom ayia napa to ayia triada for €15 yet its €10 to go the 2 km journey from ayia napa centre to nissi beach.
they moan in ayia napa about all the youngsters hiring mopeds and quads to get to the beach but it works out much cheaper than having to pay €10 each way every day if you go to the becah a lot.

we are coming to Cyprus beginning of october-how much is it on average from Larnaca airport to Pernera in a taxi?There are 5 of us so will need large taxi/minibus (are these readily available without pre booking?)We arrive at 10.40 at night

Most of the taxis are 5 seater Mercedes - cost 65 euros one way at night. Best to pre book www.grabthatcab.com

Thans for speedy reply!!

Don%26#39;t get me wrong - I totally agree with all replys here ! But its no worse than what the taxi drivers are doing back here,There is even a fee already on the meter as soon as you get in a taxi,You dont see that in cyprus.And also in cyprus they give you a price before you get in(if you ask for one first),And if you dont like what they quote then dont get in. Simple !!!
|||
That%26#39;s simply isn%26#39;t true about hving nothing on the meter.....that%26#39;s part of the problem. By law the Cypriot Taxis are supposed to use the meter in the cab, when they do €4 should be on the meter as that%26#39;s the minimum cost. That amount covers you for the beginning of a journey, the same as the UK.
Unfortunately most of the Cypriot drivers flout the law and don%26#39;t use the meter but you as a customer can demand that they do and report them if they don%26#39;t as long as you get their drivers licence number which is displayed in all cabs.
When they don%26#39;t use it they frequently make the price up as they go along ! Hence the issue with the ridiculous pricing.
Thankfully not all drivers are the same, I have the mobile numbers of 2 great drivers in the area whom I ring for all my cabs and can happily say I never get ripped off.

All that i am saying is that i have been to cyprus twice in the last 2 years for 2 weeks at a time - 1 to paphos and 1 to protaras and not once did i see a price on the meter.
As i said - I agree with the other posts,I did not know about the law in cypus and the taxis,But now you have said this i will ask the drivers next year when i go back to cyprus

I always advise people to ask them to use the meter....they don%26#39;t like it though...for obvious reasons and some have refused to take people !
I guess the more that do complain the more likely they%26#39;ll start adhering to the law ?
